Meet Jose: The Expert Who Keeps Our Systems Running Smoothly

As always, we are excited to share some updates about our team and the work we're doing to serve our clients. Today, we want to introduce you to one of our most valuable team members: Jose, the expert who keeps our systems running smoothly.

Cobol Jose

We recently held an interview with Jose Torres, our COBOL developer who has been with us for over a year, and during that time, he has become an integral part of our team. As our Cobol Developer, he is responsible for ensuring that our company's technology infrastructure is reliable, efficient, and secure. He oversees our servers, networks, and software applications, making sure that they are all up-to-date and functioning optimally.

From Industrial Engineer to COBOL Expert

Jose unexpectedly became a COBOL developer after finishing his master's degree in industrial engineering in Spain. He was selected along with 14 other non-Computer Science graduates by an international IT company, who believed their engineering mindset was valuable for problem-solving. After receiving two weeks of training in COBOL, Jose was assigned to a project with one of Spain's largest banks where he gained practical experience and was excited about the opportunity.

Collaboration and Communication

Jose frequently collaborates with other developers and stakeholders on COBOL projects, which he believes is necessary due to the experience and type of projects they work on. He emphasizes the importance of building close relationships with team members, encouraging small talk, coffee breaks, and face-to-face meetings when possible. This helps build trust, where one is not afraid to ask "stupid questions" or admit not knowing something. Understanding individual circumstances, such as communication preferences, helps maximize collaboration, efficiency, and job satisfaction.

A Day in the Life of Jose

Jose's typical day as a COBOL developer starts at around 8 am, where he gets online without needing to commute. He has breakfast outside to help activate himself and checks for any special issues for the day. At 9:30 am, there is a daily meeting where they can discuss any important matters. Afterward, he spends his time analyzing and solving incidents or requests from users with the 4 eyes principle to promote collaboration and training. Jose takes small breaks to exercise, which he finds necessary when working from home for so many hours.

Embracing New Technologies

Jose stays up to date with new developments and technologies in the field of COBOL. He believes that although COBOL is an old and stable technology, there are some development tools like IDz that allow for user-friendly coding, testing, and debugging. Jose finds researching based on a real case and collaborating with colleagues to find original solutions interesting. He also finds reading business-related documentation related to his project useful in understanding business concepts behind the code, which helps in identifying bugs or analyzing new processes.

Gradual Learning and Motivation

Jose advises that young students are not interested in learning COBOL, and many young graduates quit quickly and focus on new technologies they learned in university or other trainings. He suggests joining a project that combines multiple technologies and taking on COBOL tasks gradually. Jose believes that learning COBOL is not difficult if one has previous programming experience, but motivation in the recruitment process is key. He recommends joining a graduate’s program or any company that provides training through internships.

We are proud to have Jose as a part of our team, and we are grateful for his unwavering commitment to keeping our systems running smoothly. Please join us in thanking him for his exceptional work and dedication.  Thank you for reading, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.
